Commercials on US TV #021
It's been almost a month since I've been in the United States, and from time to time, I watch the programming here. There are a few things that caught my attention.
The State inviting you to live there
The state of Ohio advertises for people to move there. They show a couple who met, got married, had kids, and are living happily ever after. I found it curious.
A lot of medication commercials
TV shows a lot of medication commercials, especially weight loss drugs, like those trendy weight loss pens. What's bizarre is that after talking about the benefits of the product, they list the side effects, saying you could have this or that serious side effect, while in the background, they show people smiling, happy, and living joyful lives after using the medication. There’s probably a law that requires companies to mention the side effects. The "happy background" doesn't match the side effects message, which I found funny (though maybe I shouldn't, but here they must be used to it since it's their reference).
Fast food and restaurant chains
There are a lot of ads for Subway, Burger King, KFC, etc., but that's expected.
Car commercials
This isn’t surprising either since this is the land of cars. There are several car brands I didn't even know existed until I discovered them here.
Cell phones
I see more aggressive marketing from Samsung, promoting their flip phone. Apple also advertises, focusing more on privacy.
Artificial Intelligence and technology services
I see Google promoting Gemini, IBM promoting Watson, and other companies advertising some digital products. Something I've never seen on TV in Brazil.
Banks
This is also expected; in every country, banks need to advertise. But most of the banks here I had never heard of.
Small home renovation services
There's a fair number of ads from companies that do small renovations, like replacing windows, remodeling bathrooms, adapting bathrooms for older people, etc.
Vaccines
I’ve never seen this in Brazil either, companies advertising vaccines on TV.
Overall impressions
I feel like the commercials here are more elaborate, much longer, and companies can better develop the stories behind what they’re trying to sell. I also feel like there's less aesthetic pressure here compared to Brazil, where they mostly hire model-level attractive people (maybe they are models, haha). Here, the commercials feature more regular people, the kind you'd see in everyday life.
